A commercial passenger jet traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after a violent confrontation broke out in the cockpit. The incident aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073 escalated into a suspected hijacking and crash attempt when the first officer reportedly attacked the aircraft’s captain with a knife while at cruising altitude. The violent struggle sent the aircraft plunging thousands of feet, prompting immediate panic among passengers before off-duty flight crew and travelers intervened to subdue the assailant.
According to flight records and eyewitness accounts, distress calls were raised as crew members noticed the sudden altitude drop and heard screams of “Help, help!” echoing from the front of the cabin. Passengers seated near the front of the plane rushed toward the flight deck, joining off-duty aviators who were traveling on board to confront the attacker. Together, the group managed to restrain the co-pilot and force him out of the cockpit, allowing replacement pilots to regain control of the diving aircraft. An Israeli dentist traveling on the flight rendered emergency medical treatment to the severely wounded captain during the descent.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the public following the event, characterizing the airborne violence as “a highly severe security incident”. “I really appreciate the warm attitude of the Saudi authorities to the Israeli passengers whose plane got into trouble and had to make an emergency landing in Jeddah,” Netanyahu stated during a briefing, commending the cooperation between regional neighbors during the crisis. Saudi officials subsequently took the suspect into custody upon arrival to undergo interrogation, while both injured pilots were transported to a regional hospital for treatment.
International political figures also weighed in on the tense midair emergency, which temporarily put regional security forces on high alert. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee commented on the incident, noting that it “had everyone in the Middle East (esp Israel) on FULL ALERT this morning”. Huckabee expressed relief that the situation did not escalate into a fatal disaster, adding, “Glad it wasn’t more serious,” though noting that “having pilots inflight detouring to ‘fist city’ not your ordinary experience”.
All passengers aboard the flight were confirmed safe following the landing, and arrangements were made to transport them onward to their final destination. Aviation authorities and international security agencies have launched formal investigations to determine how a weapon was brought aboard the aircraft and to clarify the motive behind the attack.
