The board of trustees for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts passed a resolution on Tuesday to immediately shut down the complex to conduct structural renovations, bringing a swift pause to operations at the national cultural institution. The decision follows a draft resolution framing the closure as an urgent safety precaution, describing the primary facility as “unsafe for continued occupancy” amid an ongoing dispute surrounding the site’s oversight and physical upkeep.
President Trump later posted to Truth Social that aside from the immediately closure of the main complex, no renovations would take place unless his name is restored to the institution. Trump wrote: “The Board of The Kennedy Center today agreed, almost unanimously, to close the Building for Safety reasons, and so that it can begin the process of Reconstruction. The closing will take place immediately, however, the Renovation and Reconstruction, which is a very large and complex job, cannot begin until such time as the D.C. Circuit rules on the Board’s approved name. If the ruling is a negative one, which it should not be, and is not overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, the Reconstruction and the Renovation of The Kennedy Center will not take place.”
The unanimous vote concentrates on executing a multi-year modernization campaign estimated at $257 million. Project plans encompass essential infrastructure work, including comprehensive upgrades to auditorium seating, plumbing, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. While the main venue undergoes extensive reconstruction, affiliated groups like the National Symphony Orchestra are slated to shift scheduled performances to regional partner locations and touring sites.
The immediate suspension comes amid a protracted legal and administrative battle over proposed external exterior modifications. A federal judge reaffirmed earlier in the day that exterior inscriptions honorific to former administration leaders cannot be installed without approval, writing, “Simply put, defendants cannot install memorials for President Trump or anyone or anything else at the Kennedy Center without Congress’s blessing”. The court noted that “The board resolution bucks a federal court order and a statute Congress enacted”.
Leadership has highlighted decaying facilities to justify the rapid timeline, pointing to interior degradation as evidence that sweeping intervention is necessary. Administration representatives argued that “the entire building is in this kind of shape” and asserted that only focused executive leadership “can deliver the renovation on time and on budget”. The emergency closure aims to address structural deterioration before conditions worsen.
