President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he is nominating Dr. Heidi Overton, currently serving as deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, to head the Food and Drug Administration. Overton, a physician who holds a doctorate in clinical investigation from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, has been a key internal voice shaping the administration’s conservative healthcare initiatives.

Taking to social media to share the selection, Trump praised his nominee, posting on Truth Social that “Dr. Heidi has been a ROCKSTAR in my administration, where she has worked directly with Secretary Kennedy, Dr. Oz, and team, to deliver on the MOST TRANSFORMATIVE Health Agenda in History”.

The high-profile nomination comes following months of leadership turnover at the nation’s primary regulatory body for pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and food safety. Overton would fill the vacancy left by Dr. Marty Makary, who stepped down in May after internal disagreements with executive leadership. Kyle Diamantas, the head of the FDA’s food branch, has been leading the agency on an interim basis since Makary’s departure. Trump emphasized that his new nominee “is known to take on the HARDEST issues and bring me solutions that work best for the Country” as she prepares to step into the permanent post.

Prior to her current role at the White House, Overton served as chief policy officer at the conservative think tank America First Policy Institute and completed a White House fellowship focused on healthcare policy. Over recent weeks, she has emerged as a visible representative for executive policy rollouts, standing alongside Trump during public appearances regarding prescription drug pricing, expanded access to psychedelic therapies, and changes to childhood immunization guidance. The administration is framing her appointment as a major step toward modernizing regulatory processes, with Trump stating, “We need her leadership at the FDA now to ensure that the U.S. remains the WORLD LEADER for Scientific Discovery and CURES”.

If confirmed by the Senate, Overton will assume responsibility for an agency tasked with overseeing products that account for roughly 20 cents of every dollar spent by American consumers. Conservative political organizations and anti-abortion advocates quickly praised the choice, expressing optimism that she will advance strict regulatory oversight and family-focused priorities. Meanwhile, major public health organizations and political opponents are expected to carefully vet her background and policy stances during the upcoming confirmation process, raising concerns about potential shifts in federal health standards and vaccination frameworks.

The nomination now moves to the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, where lawmakers will evaluate Overton’s credentials, administrative experience, and regulatory vision. If approved by the committee, her nomination will advance to a full floor vote in the upper chamber. Industry observers and healthcare analysts note that establishing permanent leadership at the FDA remains a critical priority for maintaining stability across the biopharmaceutical, biotechnology, and agricultural markets.
