A new big-screen take on the popular 80s series Miami Vice is officially moving forward under the title “Miami Vice ’85,” starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler as detectives Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and James “Sonny” Crockett. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on August 6, 2027, and will be shot for IMAX.
The project will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for Top Gun: Maverick and F1, with production expected to begin later this year. Unlike the modern-day 2006 adaptation directed by Michael Mann and starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, this version returns to the franchise’s roots as a stylized period piece set in mid-1980s Miami.
The story draws directly from the original show’s pilot and early episodes, diving into “the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami.” The original series, created by Anthony Yerkovich and starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, ran on NBC from 1984 to 1989 and became a major cultural influence. The screenplay for “Miami Vice ’85” is written by Dan Gilroy, with an earlier draft by Eric Warren Singer. Michael Mann also returns as an executive producer.
