A grand jury has formally indicted 32-year-old Nick Reiner on two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the fatal stabbings of his parents, legendary Hollywood director Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, inside their Southern California home. The indictment, handed down on July 20 and unsealed Wednesday, significantly advances the case by adding a special circumstance allegation that the defendant lay in wait before carrying out the attack. Reiner entered a plea of not guilty to the unsealed charges during his court appearance in Los Angeles.
The grand jury indictment allows prosecutors to bypass California’s standard preliminary hearing process, moving the high-profile legal matter directly toward a trial. In addition to allegations of lying in wait and committing multiple homicides, the document incorporates a special allegation that Reiner personally used a deadly weapon, identified as a knife. If convicted on all counts, Reiner faces either life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or the death penalty, although prosecutors indicated that a final decision regarding capital punishment remains pending.
Addressing the newly unsealed court filings, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman emphasized the severity of the alleged crimes. “This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” Hochman stated. “The indictment unsealed today also adds a special circumstance allegation that the defendant committed the murders by means of lying in wait. We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice.”
The case stems from a Dec. 14, 2025 incident in which 78-year-old Rob Reiner and 70-year-old Michele Singer Reiner were found dead from multiple sharp force injuries in their Brentwood estate. Law enforcement personnel apprehended Nick Reiner later that night in Exposition Park. Rob Reiner was widely celebrated for his Emmy-winning role on the sitcom “All in the Family” and his directorial work on classic films including “A Few Good Men” and “When Harry Met Sally…”, while Michele Singer Reiner was a respected photographer and movie producer.
Currently held without bail, Nick Reiner remains in custody awaiting a scheduled pretrial hearing set for Sept. 15 at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.
