Law enforcement authorities in western Michigan are conducting a suspicious death investigation following the discovery of eight family members, including six children, inside a burning residence on Friday.

First responders dispatched to a home along the 14900 block of Riverside Trail uncovered the fatalities after putting out a blaze, with police confirming that multiple deceased individuals had suffered gunshot injuries. The victims include two adults in their 40s, identified as Amanda “Mandy” and Kristopher Karolkiewicz, and six children between 5 and 15 years old, all believed to have resided together in the home. Emergency units initially checked the area earlier Friday morning after receiving calls regarding a smoke odor but located no active fire. Upon returning around 11:40 a.m. to reports of visible smoke, firefighters entered the structure to extinguish the flames and discovered the bodies. Capt. Jacob Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office stated, “Units made entry inside to battle the fire because there was smoke showing from the residence. When they got inside, they noticed that there were several people deceased inside the home.”

Investigators suspect the fire was intentionally set, and detectives are treating the location as “a complicated scene, a complex scene,”. While official causes of death await scheduled autopsies, Sparks acknowledged that “Some of the victims had gunshot wounds to their bodies.” However, he cautioned that “It would be premature for me to say what caused their deaths.”

Local law enforcement is currently working alongside Michigan State Police arson specialists to analyze physical evidence collected from the site. Officials stated that they are not searching for external suspects at this time, with investigators evaluating a potential murder-suicide scenario involving the household’s occupants. “It’s too early for me to say that it’s a murder-suicide. I can tell you that that’s one theory that we have and we’re still looking to see if we can verify that,” Sparks explained.

Community members expressed deep shock as the investigation unfolded in the township situated near Lake Michigan. Authorities expect to release additional details and formal victim identifications once medical examiners conclude forensic evaluations.
