Marvel Studios has released the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, offering fans their clearest look yet at the next major chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before this week’s San Diego Comic-Con. Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are returning to direct the feature film, which is scheduled to open exclusively in theaters on Dec. 18.
The preview, which first debuted at CinemaCon in April, showcases a sprawling crossover that unites heroes from the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men and Wakanda while introducing Robert Downey Jr. in his highly anticipated return to the franchise — not as Iron Man, but as Victor Von Doom, the film’s central villain.
Downey’s transformation into Doctor Doom is the trailer’s defining reveal, marking his first major MCU role since Tony Stark’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame. The footage hints at an impending collision of worlds, with the assembled heroes forced into an unprecedented alliance as Doom emerges as the franchise’s next central antagonist. The trailer teases a multiverse crisis that forces longtime allies and newly introduced teams onto a collision course before they can confront a common enemy. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor emerges as a key leader attempting to unite Earth’s mightiest heroes, while the footage also features the Fantastic Four led by Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, returning X-Men characters including Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto, along with members of the New Avengers and other familiar MCU heroes. The story hints at universes converging as Doom’s growing power threatens reality itself.
Avengers: Doomsday is widely viewed as one of Marvel Studios’ most ambitious productions, with the Russo brothers returning after directing Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Industry observers expect the film to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the MCU, particularly as it launches the franchise toward Avengers: Secret Wars.
