A gunman opened fire on an Independence Day family gathering near the Coney Island boardwalk on Saturday night, wounding eight people, including four children. Emergency medical personnel transported all eight victims to local hospitals following the incident, which occurred around 10:35 p.m. on West 31st Street in Brooklyn during area holiday celebrations. The shooting unfolded just hours after Coney Island hosted its annual Independence Day celebrations, including the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest and a large fireworks display.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated during a Sunday morning news briefing that a 21-year-old woman who sustained a gunshot wound to the chest remains in critical condition. The remaining seven victims are currently in stable condition and expected to survive. They include a 25-year-old woman, two men aged 33 and 37, and four boys aged 6, 7, 12, and 14.

According to authorities, an unidentified male suspect clad entirely in black and wearing a ski mask walked up to the fence line of an apartment building courtyard and discharged a firearm into the cookout. Commissioner Tisch reported that there was no indication of any prior dispute or confrontation before the attack, and the shooter fled the scene on foot immediately after firing.

Law enforcement officials recovered a handgun equipped with an extended magazine and ten shell casings at the scene, though no suspects have been apprehended. Investigators are currently examining potential connections between this mass shooting and a separate, gang-related homicide that occurred on the very same block earlier in the week. The investigation remains ongoing as police seek surveillance footage and additional witnesses to help identify the shooter and continue working to determine a motive, as well as whether additional suspects were involved.

City leadership condemned the holiday violence on Sunday, with Mayor Zohran Mamdani stating at the briefing: “There is no place for this kind of violence in city,” We will not tolerate it and we will fight it with every tool at our disposal. As we mourn alongside those whose loved ones have been hurt, let us also recommit ourselves to the work of building a city where every celebration is safe and every holiday is joyful.”
