A United States citizen suffered a broken arm and other serious trauma during a forceful encounter with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Long Beach, California. The victim, identified as Ricardo Gonzalez, a former municipal worker in the city, was hospitalized following the weekend altercation. Surveillance footage later revealed that an unmarked vehicle traveled the wrong direction on a roadway shortly before federal personnel engaged with Gonzalez.

The Long Beach Police Department said in a statement that officers who responded to the scene Saturday saw a “large group disturbance” involving ICE agents, and located the man handcuffed and bleeding while being detained. According to witnesses and video footage, enforcement officers knocked Gonzalez off his electronic bicycle, administered two taser shocks, and forced him onto the pavement. Family members established an online fundraising campaign to help offset mounting medical bills, emphasizing that the aggressive actions taken by the personnel were entirely unjustified.

Municipal leaders expressed profound concern regarding the lack of transparency surrounding the federal operation. Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson stated that Gonzalez had managed to dial emergency services when he noticed the situation deteriorating rapidly. In response to the escalation, Richardson formally requested an independent probe into the department’s actions and urged that all federal personnel implicated in the event be stripped of enforcement duties during the inquiry.

Local police officers arrived subsequently to find the resident restrained, bleeding, and seated on a curb. “When the police arrived, we know that he was detained. He was on a curb. He was injured.” Responding local police officers transferred Gonzalez to a nearby fire station to have his restraints removed before emergency medical personnel transported him for hospital care. Tensions persisted at the scene as several federal agents followed local police back to a departmental parking facility, where they were instructed to depart. City officials noted that the event left the community with significant safety concerns and unanswered questions regarding federal tactics.

Representatives for the Department of Homeland Security and ICE have not yet provided a public rationale for why the American citizen was targeted or detailed the exact sequence of events that sparked the confrontation.
