Federal investigators executed a search warrant early Monday morning at the Washington, D.C., home of Representative Ilhan Omar as part of an active criminal probe. Officers affiliated with Homeland Security Investigations, the primary investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security, were observed outside the Minnesota Democrat’s house blocking off the surrounding street while carrying boxes from the residence. A Justice Department representative verified that the operation was carried out under a court-approved warrant. A agency spokesperson stated, “This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation”.
While authorities have not publicly disclosed specific charges, sources familiar with the matter indicated the inquiry centers on long-standing allegations regarding Omar’s historical immigration filings. Administration officials, including Vice President JD Vance and White House border adviser Tom Homan, had previously indicated in public remarks that federal agencies were evaluating claims of immigration and marriage fraud involving the lawmaker. Legal experts note that executing a search warrant requires establishing probable cause before a judge, but it does not formally constitute an indictment or proof of illegal conduct.
Following the search, Omar publicly rejected the investigation’s legitimacy and framed the raid as an act of political retaliation driven by the administration. In a statement shared on social media, she stated, “I’m OK. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement”. Characterizing the probe as the “latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation,” the third-term congresswoman added, “I will not be silenced”. Her office previously dismissed similar allegations made by White House officials as unfounded, defamatory fabrications.
The law enforcement action represents a sharp escalation in the long-standing friction between the White House and progressive House lawmakers. First elected to represent Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District in 2018, Omar was among the first Muslim women elected to Congress and has remained an outspoken opponent of federal immigration policies. Top House Democratic leadership immediately denounced the search, characterizing the early-morning raid at a sitting representative’s home as an unprecedented abuse of executive authority.
