PepsiCo has voluntarily pulled more than 122,000 cases of sports drinks across 37 states after regulatory authorities discovered that several product lines failed to list artificial colorings on their packaging. According to safety notices released by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the market withdrawal encompasses roughly 2.9 million to 3.4 million individual 28-ounce bottles of Gatorade and Gatorade Zero. The affected items contain unlisted Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6 food dyes, prompting federal regulators to monitor the ongoing removal effort under enforcement action number H-0009-2027.
The nationwide action focuses specifically on four flavor offerings: Gatorade Lemon Lime, Gatorade Lemon Lime Zero, Gatorade Orange, and Gatorade Orange Zero. Manufacturers initially kicked off the voluntary movement on Sept. 25 after discovering that required ingredient disclosures were absent from product labels. Federal regulators subsequently designated the action as a Class II recall on Oct. 2, an official threshold indicating that exposure to the items “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” while “the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
Unlisted synthetic additives like tartrazine, commonly listed as Yellow No. 5, along with Sunset Yellow FCF, known as Yellow No. 6, represent the primary driver behind the federal enforcement. Although both ingredients are permitted in non-alcoholic beverages under agency rules, food law strictly mandates their explicit display on external labels to safeguard susceptible consumers. Health officials note that while general health risks remain low, individuals suffering from specific dye allergies or distinct sensitivities may experience localized side effects. The health organization highlights that artificial yellow color additives “may cause itching and hives in some people.”
Distribution records reveal that impacted inventory reached retail channels across nationwide territories, including California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. Fifteen specific manufacturing lot codes fall within the scope of the recall, with package expiration dates spanning between April 18, 2027, and June 8, 2027. No official injury reports or documented health incidents tied to the missing ingredient disclaimers have been publicly confirmed by regulators.
Consumers holding 28-ounce Gatorade containers are encouraged to inspect stamped packaging markings to identify whether their beverage matches affected lot numbers. Retail establishments that received shipments of the implicated lot codes are advised to pull the sports drinks from sales displays immediately. Public health agencies recommend that consumers sensitive to food colorings discard the items or contact their local retailer directly regarding standard refund procedures.
