Prime Video has set an Oct. 7 premiere for its television adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie, while also dropping the first trailer; check it out HERE.

The eight-episode drama marks the first time King’s 1974 debut novel has been adapted as a television series, with filmmaker Mike Flanagan serving as writer, director and showrunner. Originally published in 1974, Carrie launched King’s literary career and inspired several previous screen adaptations, most notably Brian De Palma’s acclaimed 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek in the titular role.

The series stars Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, a socially isolated teenager whose life is upended after her father’s death forces her into public high school, where relentless bullying coincides with the emergence of her telekinetic abilities. Samantha Sloyan portrays Carrie’s deeply religious mother, Margaret White, while the cast also includes Siena Agudong, Matthew Lillard, Amber Midthunder, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti and Thalia Dudek.

An official synopsis reads that the series “expands the world, bringing new depth and complexity to its beloved characters while exploring the forces that shape Carrie White as she navigates the cruelty and pressure of the modern world — building toward a single, shattering night.”  Flanagan’s adaptation updates the classic horror story by weaving in contemporary issues, including social media harassment, viral public shaming and the pressures facing modern teenagers. The filmmaker has said the production worked with high school students to better reflect today’s adolescent experiences while preserving the emotional core and supernatural horror that made King’s novel a genre landmark.
