Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison in a Manhattan court following his conviction for sexually assaulting former television production assistant Miriam Haley at his Manhattan apartment in 2006, restoring a high-profile penalty in a landmark #MeToo case.
Judge Curtis Farber rendered the decision against the 74-year-old disgraced movie mogul, adding five years of post-release supervision and mandating sex offender registration. The fresh penalty stems from a retrial in which a jury found Weinstein guilty of committing a forced sexual act against Miriam Haley at his apartment in 2006, concluding a complex judicial sequence after the New York Court of Appeals overturned his original 2020 conviction and 23-year term over trial evidentiary errors.
Addressing the court with an emotional victim impact statement, Haley detailed the deep psychological toll, public scrutiny, and lingering distress caused by the protracted legal battle. She recounted how coping with the encounter eroded her well-being, remarking that she “Often felt like I was the one on trial” due to intense cross-examinations and public attention. Prosecutors pressed for the maximum term, highlighting that Weinstein displayed a persistent refusal to acknowledge responsibility, while defense counsel pointed to his advanced age and declining health in a bid for leniency.
Weinstein spoke briefly to express regret for the interaction while continuing to maintain his overall innocence. “I really do have remorse for Miriam Haley,” he stated, adding, “I live with many regrets and sincerely apologize for my actions,” before asking the judge for mercy so he could spend time with his family. Before announcing the term, Judge Farber observed that the former titan of independent film destroyed his career, declaring, “Your legacy could have been cemented with greatness. But you threw it all away by assaulting Miriam Haley”.
The New York prison term will run alongside a separate 16-year sentence handed down in California following his 2022 conviction for assaulting an Italian model in Los Angeles. A California appeals court upheld those convictions in June but ordered him to be resentenced. Correctional authorities will now coordinate the logistics of his state sentences to ensure the former executive remains behind bars for the rest of his life.
