DreamWorks Animation is expanding the Shrek franchise with “Donkey,” a standalone film centered on Eddie Murphy’s fan-favorite character that is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 30, 2028. The project will explore the character’s beginnings, telling “the origin story of how a donkey became Donkey.” The release is set exactly one year after Shrek 5 debuts in theaters on June 30, 2027. Murphy will reprise the voice role he has played since the original Shrek premiered in 2001.

Charlie Bean has been tapped to direct the animated feature, with longtime DreamWorks story artist Matt Flynn serving as co-director and Rebecca Huntley producing. The announcement officially confirms a project Murphy has discussed publicly for more than a year, previously revealing that the story would further develop Donkey’s family, including his dragon wife and their half-dragon, half-donkey children.

The solo adventure continues DreamWorks’ investment in one of animation’s most successful franchises. Including the Puss in Boots films, the series has generated billions of dollars at the global box office since its launch 25 years ago, with Shrek 5 expected to reunite Murphy with Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz while introducing Zendaya as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia. The newly released trailer for Shrek 5 has already reignited interest in the franchise ahead of next summer’s return.
