Apple TV has released the first trailer for “Mayday,” an upcoming action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh that blends Cold War espionage with an unlikely friendship between two enemies. The film is scheduled to premiere globally on Apple TV on Sept. 4.
Directed and written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the filmmakers behind “Game Night” and “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” “Mayday” follows U.S. Navy pilot Lt. Troy “Assassin” Kelly (Reynolds), whose top-secret mission during the Cold War goes wrong, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines in Soviet territory.
The trailer introduces Kenneth Branagh as Nikolai Ustinov, an eccentric former KGB agent who discovers Troy and becomes his unexpected ally. The two characters, separated by national loyalties but connected by circumstance, must work together to survive while attempting to escape the dangers surrounding them. Described as a genre-bending buddy comedy with action and spy thriller elements, the film also stars Maria Bakalova, Marcin Dorociński and David Morse. “Mayday” marks Reynolds’ return to a leading film role following the success of “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
