Illumination and Universal Pictures have shared the first teaser trailer for Not Alone, introducing Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez as the voices behind an original animated sci-fi romantic comedy scheduled to arrive in theaters in April 2027.
The project marks Chalamet’s first major voice-acting role in a feature-length animated film, while Gomez returns to the genre following her previous work in the Hotel Transylvania franchise. Not Alone also reunites Chalamet with Gomez years after they appeared together in the Woody Allen film A Rainy Day in New York.
According to the official studio logline, Chalamet voices Joe, an “introverted rocket mechanic who lives a quiet life alone,” while Gomez will portray Fran, a “brilliant astro-botanist who is developing the world’s first-ever plant-fueled rocket.” The storyline follows the two characters as they prepare for the inaugural launch of the vessel. “When Joe and Fran are brought together to prepare for the inaugural launch of this revolutionary rocket, there are immediate sparks, but neither is particularly adept at romance,” the synopsis states.
The preview centers on Joe and Fran, whose growing connection is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of three runaway alien visitors. The teaser initially focuses on the pair’s budding romance as they work together on a groundbreaking plant-powered rocket before shifting into a fast-paced adventure. According to the film’s official synopsis, “Life becomes more complicated when three aliens — tiny, unruly and adorable — take refuge in Joe’s home.” The extraterrestrial trio, named Dunk, Welly and Shirm, are fleeing an overzealous but ineffective law officer, Zandro, and believe Fran’s experimental rocket offers their best chance of returning home.
The ensemble voice cast includes Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan and Jamie Demetriou as the alien fugitives, Brett Goldstein as Zandro, along with Academy Award winner Allison Janney and Lamorne Morris. The film is directed by Eric Guillon, Claire Dodgson and Jonathan Del Val, marking Guillon’s first feature as lead director after years of creative work with Illumination.
