President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ousted his top military leader, Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, on Tuesday after days of nationwide public demonstrations demanding the general’s removal. In the largest leadership reorganization of Ukraine’s armed forces since 2024, Zelenskyy selected Mykhailo Drapatyi to take over as the commander-in-chief.

The military overhaul stems from mounting political friction and civil unrest sparked by the recent firing of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. Demonstrators took to the streets across Kyiv and other cities, calling for Fedorov’s reinstatement while condemning Syrskyi’s traditional, Soviet-era leadership style. Critics argued that the top general resisted modern tactical reforms, including the rapid integration of drone warfare and decentralized command structures.

Announcing the transition, Zelenskyy emphasized the necessity of unified military objectives. “Our shared wish is one — victory over the enemy and conditions at the front and in pressure on Russia that would force Russia toward peace,” Zelenskyy said in a statement following a series of consultations with defense officials. While making the change, the president acknowledged the outgoing commander’s contributions to key campaigns in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Kursk, adding, “I am grateful to Oleksandr Syrskyi and to every one of our warriors for Ukraine’s strong front-line positions”. Turning to the new appointee, Zelenskyy noted, “I am grateful to Mykhailo Drapatyi for holding that same view”.

The selection of Drapatyi signals a shift toward a younger tier of military leaders willing to embrace operational reform. Following the announcement, Fedorov publicly commended the decision and praised the public for driving the change, writing on Telegram that “This is a breath of fresh air and new hope in the struggle. It is the voice of change that could not go unheard”.
