Apple TV+ has scheduled the premiere of “Brothers,” a new comedy series starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, for Sept. 23. The eight-episode show reunites the longtime friends and former “True Detective” co-stars, who portray fictionalized versions of themselves in a story inspired by persistent speculation that they could be related.

The series centers on Harrelson and his family arriving at McConaughey’s ranch near Austin, Texas, for an extended stay following a family setback. Their friendship is thrown into turmoil after a decades-old secret resurfaces, prompting questions about whether the pair may actually share a family connection. At the same time, McConaughey faces a separate personal challenge as he considers a possible run for governor of Texas.

“Brothers” draws from real-life comments made by the actors in recent years regarding rumors about their families. The premise expands that speculation into a comedic narrative exploring friendship, family relationships and fame. Holland Taylor stars as McConaughey’s mother, with Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Oona Yaffe, Highdee Kuan, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton and Noah Carganilla among the supporting cast.

‘Brothers’ also marks McConaughey and Harrelson’s first television collaboration since the acclaimed first season of “True Detective” in 2014. Production was completed after earlier delays, and much of the series was filmed in and around Austin. The comedy is led by Lee Eisenberg, known for his work on “The Office,” and is produced with both stars serving as executive producers.

Apple TV+ will release the first two episodes on Sept. 23, with additional installments arriving weekly through the season finale in early November.
